Young Slovenian Photographer Receives National Geographic International Award

01.02.2016

The seat of the National Geographic Society in Washington has announced the winners of the international photography contest, in which young readers of the National Geographic Kids magazine and its 11 international licensed editions around the world took part. From more than 17,500 participating entries, the photograph entitled Giant by nine-year-old Julij Kopilović from Ljubljana came in second place in the category of Amazing Animals.

The competition was, like every year, conducted in two stages – first individually by country (in the United States, Australia/New Zealand, Bulgaria, Egypt, Indonesia, Germany, Slovenia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, China, the Netherlands and Portugal), and then also at the international level. In total, more than 17,500 photos were sent into the competition, which is the highest number so far.

The photography competition of the Slovenian National Geographic Junior magazine, which was held for the eleventh time this year, is the first contest for children organised by the National Geographic anywhere in the world, and is an entirely Slovenian idea. Soon thereafter this form of encouragement to young photographers gained followers also in the other editorial boards of the National Geographic around the world. In 2008, the competition grew into the National Geographic International Photography Contest for Kids.
